1) I don't have an international driving license (IDL), can I use my local driving license issued from Hong Kong instead of IDL? 2) How long can I drive in Malaysia?

If you have an international driving license (IDL), you could easily drive in Malaysia as long as the license is valid. In your case, you could convert your domestic license from HongKong to a Malaysian driving license permit. License conversion options are if you either on a Employment, Dependent or student pass -your pass should be valid > 3 months. If you are on a social/ visit pass- your domestic license can’t be used for conversion to Malaysian driving license permit. License conversion process follows: -Malaysian government agreement states automatic conversion of driving licenses for Hong Kong citizens, so you could go directly to the Road Transport Department / Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan (JPJ) @ Wangsa Maju. Address: Lot 14264 Jalan Genting Kelang, 53300 Setapak, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Tel : 603-4024 1200. -Submit this documents -Passport / HK domestic license (Original / Copy), 1 colour photograph (25mm * 32 mm) and Translation of HK driving license from Chinese embassy documented in English. To convert your existing HK domestic license to Malaysian driving license would cost RM20 - Process fee and RM30 - Annual fee for license validity.

3. My wife and I are planning to move from the UK to Malaysia

My wife and I are planning to move from the UK to Malaysia on the MM2H program, we want to buy a property. Ideally we want to move somewhere fairly quiet and good value for money. Our budget is maximum £350k. Things like broadband, access to a good golf club and not to far away from shopping areas are a plus. Our kids are grown so schools are not important. Which areas would you suggest that we look at first. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. We heard Penang was a good place to live.

Hi Mark, For a number of years the Malaysian property market has appeared under valued and has attracted a significant number of overseas interest. With recent increased liberalisation, good lending and freehold ownership further growth seems inevitable. However the big news is that capital gains tax was abolished on 1st April 2007, which should see prices rise dramatically over the coming years. Additionally, increased relaxation of exchange rate laws could see further hardening of the Malaysian Ringgit, which has been strengthing since the beginning of 2007.
